Music

Intent Statement for Music

At our school, Music is intended to be high-quality, inspiring, fun and inclusive, enabling all children to develop skills in listening, performing, composing and self-expression. We provide a broad and engaging curriculum that ensures every pupil can participate, achieve and experience success, regardless of background, need or prior experience.

Our inclusive approach recognises that children learn in different ways. Through practical, visual, auditory and kinaesthetic experiences, alongside appropriate scaffolding and challenge, all pupils – including those with SEND – are supported to engage confidently in music-making. Music is valued as a powerful tool for communication, creativity and emotional expression.

Pupils develop an understanding of the interrelated dimensions of music: pitch, duration, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and dynamics. They explore these through listening, singing, playing, movement and body percussion, and by engaging with a wide range of musical genres, styles and cultural traditions.

Children learn to play a variety of instruments, including tuned percussion (chime bars and glockenspiels), as well as percussion, woodwind (ocarina) and strings (ukulele). They perform both individually and as part of ensembles, developing technical skills, including improvisation and composition, confidence and teamwork.

Music technology is integrated into the curriculum, enabling pupils to compose, record and evaluate music using digital tools, supporting creativity and accessibility for all learners.

Music is delivered by a specialist teacher and enriched through performances and wider opportunities, both in school and out of school. We

want our children to develop a life-long love of music and strive to provide the foundations future musical engagement.
