SCARF – Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship

SCARF's whole-school approach supports primary schools in promoting positive behaviour, mental health, wellbeing, resilience and achievement – giving you everything you need to meet the Relationships Education and Health Education statutory requirements. More than just a PSHE scheme of work, SCARF supports great learning every day. SCARF represents our values for children of Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship.

Meeting all DfE requirements for statutory Relationships and Health Education, and mapped to the PSHE Association's Programme of Study, SCARF is a framework consisting of lesson plans, online planning, assessment and Ofsted tools to give busy teachers skills and confidence to embed a comprehensive Relationships and Health Education, PSHE Education and Wellbeing programme throughout the primary years. SCARF is a whole-school approach to promoting behaviour, safety, achievement and wellbeing.

An overview of PSHE and RSHE at Lancaster Christ Church for Parents

At Lancaster Christ Church, we are proud to work with a range of partners to support the safety and wellbeing of our children through educational programmes and activities:

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service

Each year, we welcome firefighters and specialist community fire safety staff from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service into school to deliver the 'ChildSafe' and 'RoadSense' programmes to our Year 2 and Year 6 pupils respectively.

ChildSafe: Year 2RoadSense: Year 6

This lesson usually lasts one hour and focuses on increasing knowledge about fire risks, how to best avoid one and awareness of what to do in the event that a fire does happen or the alarm is raised.

It covers:

  • What we do as a Fire and Rescue Service

  • General fire risks

  • Dangers of matches and lighters

  • What to do if clothes catch fire using the “Stop, Drop and Roll” technique as well as one for wheelchair users

  • Understanding what a smoke alarm is and the importance of having a working one

  • The importance of having an escape action or fire plan (similar to a fire drill in school or other public building). This is reinforced by an age suitable film.

  • Applying an escape action plan through role play and how to call 999

At the end of the lesson classroom materials will be provided and every child will be given some leaflets to take home. One of them is a Factsheet which acts like a letter home saying what your child did in the session and is designed to help parents/carers reinforce the key safety messages.

RoadSense is our Year 6 road safety package which looks at how to become a safe independent traveller.

The hour long session is designed to help pupils to consider how they will travel to their new school safely and plan their route.

It covers:

  • The importance of wearing seatbelts and using appropriate car seats

  • Safe cycling including wearing cycle helmets

  • Pedestrian safety

  • Be safe be seen

  • Not causing a distraction when travelling in a car

At the end of the lesson classroom materials will be provided and every child will be given a Factsheet to take home. This acts like a letter home saying what your child did in the session and is designed to help parents/carers reinforce the key safety messages.

Bikability Training

Each year, we offer Bikability Training free of charge to our Year 6 pupils.

The training is provided by Go Velo and, at Level 1, helps children to:

Check the cycle is ready for a journey

Set off, pedal, slow down and stop.

Some children will progress onto Level 2 of the training, which includes learning how to:

Cycle safely and responsibly

Identify and respond to hazards

Start and stop on-road journeys

Maintain suitable riding positions

Share the road with others and communicate with other road users

Comply with signals, signs and road markings
