Art & Design

  • Why is Art & Design important?

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

The INTENT of our Art & Design Curriculum

Aims of the Art & Design Curriculum

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

* produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences

* become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques

* evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design

* know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

Aims of the Art & Design Curriculum at Lancaster Christ Church:

Through the teaching of Art & Design at Lancaster Christ Church, we aim to:

* Facilitate opportunities for children to be active participants and investigators in their own learning

*Discuss, compare and learn from our own work and others

* Develop a variety of techniques in order to further improve our skills and creativity in each aspect of Art and Design

* Provide pupils with the means to engage with and understand the world, to explore their relationship with it, to think about it and to express their ideas.

* Read, interpret and construct meaning from the signs, symbols and codes they encounter in their environment, in works of art and in design. They then make use of this visual language in their own art, craft and design work.

How is the Art & Design Curriculum planned at Lancaster Christ Church?

At Lancaster Christ Church, we are committed to providing a broad and balanced curriculum which provides rich opportunities for children to explore a range of subjects, thus developing a variety of knowledge, skills and interests which they can apply to opportunities, responsibilities and experiences in later life.

We value the individuality of our children and their various curriculum strengths and interests. As a school, we aim to provide opportunities for children to build upon these to become the best that they can be:

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

1 Peter 4: 10

We have developed an Art & Design curriculum which:

* is reflective of our local context, making use of the surrounding environment in order to enable children to create and express themselves artistically;

* will enable children to use a variety of media to develop their exploration and curiosity of art;

* is logically sequenced so that new knowledge and skills build on what has been taught before;

* uses a spiral approach so that children have an opportunity to connect new knowledge with existing knowledge;

* clearly identifies the key Art and Design intentions within a theme and ensures that there is a clear link between these and the activities planned for the children.
